These are some of the competitions we participated in 2024-25! Scroll below for more information!
The Myers Park Mu Alpha Theta chapter plans to compete in a variety of individual and group competitions this year! Details on each are below. Participation in some group competitions is contingent upon having an adequate number of people to form a team. Additional fees will likely be incurred to participate in competitions - more information below.
We will participate in both the Interschool Contest and Individual Rounds for 24-25. The dates for each are as follows:
Interschool Contest: November 6-19, 2024
Individual Round 1: January 8-28, 2025
Individual Round 2: February 5-25, 2025
Individual Round 3: March 4-24, 2025
MPHS MUAT-specific dates will be available on the 'Calendar' page soon!
This competition is free of charge; thus, we expect all members to participate in at least 2/4 of these competitions (2 individual rounds or 1 individual round and the Interschool Contest).
Content Covered:
Topics include geometry, algebra, precalculus, probability, number theory and more. The divisions relevant to MUAT are Apollo, which covers content up to Algebra 2 (equivalent to NC Math 3) and Discovery, which is "Comprehensive" (all students enrolled in a math course higher than Math 3 compete in this level).
This competition will be held on TBD (most likely a school day) at UNCC and is a qualifier for the NCCTM State Math Contest held at the North Carolina School of Science and Math in Durham. Based on 23-24 information, the cost is $15 per student (some cost may be covered by dues - TBD).
Registration for this contest is LIMITED - our chapter can only take 15 students to this contest. If you are interested, please let MUAT leadership know, even though it is early in the year!
Content Covered:
The Level 3 Contest exam is completed by students enrolled in Math 3, while the Comprehensive Contest exam is completed by those enrolled in a math course higher than Math 3. Elementary number theory, combinatorics, probability, logic, algebra, geometry, trigonometry, and pre-calculus are the main topics of the Comprehensive exam. No problem should require calculus.
The AMC 10/12 are 25-question, 75-minute multiple-choice competition tests for students in grades 10 and under and 11-12, respectively.
For 2024, the two nationwide dates for the AMC 10/12 are Wednesday, November 6 and Tuesday, November 12. The Myers Park MUAT date is Wednesday, November 6.
Content Covered:
The AMC 10 covers mathematics normally associated with grades 9 and 10 and assumes knowledge of elementary algebra; basic geometry knowledge including the Pythagorean Theorem, area and volume formulas; elementary number theory; and elementary probability. Trigonometry, advanced algebra, and advanced geometry are excluded from the AMC 10, but included on the AMC 12, which encompasses the entire high school mathematics curriculum but excludes calculus.
The rounds will take place on the following dates after school for 24-25:
- Wednesday, December 4
- Wednesday, February 5
- Wednesday, March 5
- Wednesday, April 9
From year to year, there may be a small charge for CML depending on how much can be covered by the MUAT dues and/or potential math department funds.
Content Covered & Other Information:
Calculus League
"The questions are designed to enhance understanding of the calculus. At the same time they will prepare your students for the AB level of the AP examination. Calculators approved by ETS may be used."
